Herts Interpreting and Translation Service (HITS) has been commissioned by Cumbria County Council to deliver the County's first professional interpreter-training course. The course will take place during November and December in Penrith and will comprise 25 trainees from across the County. Languages covered will include Cantonese, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak and Spanish. Assessment of trainees will take place in January 2008. Cllr Jack Richardson, Cabinet member responsible for equality within Cumbria County Council, said: "This is an important scheme that will help us provide access to services for everyone. By training a group of interpreters, we will be creating a resource that all public organisations in the county can tap into. Cumbria is becoming a more ethnically diverse place and the way we shape our services needs to reflect that fact." The proposed Service will launch in April 2008.
