An Introduction to Public Service Interpreting

This specially designed 36-hour course (one day a week for six weeks) offers a solid grounding in the technical skills (note-taking, glossaries, management of interpreting exchanges, etc) and ethics (confidentiality, impartiality, etc) of public service interpreting, a series of presentations by guest lecturers from public services and an independently assessed Certificate of Interpreter Proficiency (the minimum level of professional attainment required in order to work for our Service). This course is not only an entity in its own right but also a formal introduction to our longer Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) course. This course is offered in both the Local Government and Health specialisms. We also offer specialised short-courses dedicated solely to Education or Social Services.

From January 2006, we will offer the DPSI in both Local Government and Health specialisms.

Working with Interpreters

This one-day course is offered for service providers wishing to work with interpreters. It introduces participants to the skills and qualities possessed by a professional public service interpreter as well as the general principles of interpreting. Through the use of tailor-made role-plays in the company of trained interpreters, participants have an opportunity to acquire practical experience of managing an interpreting situation. In addition, this course offers guidance on the practicalities of booking an interpreter, how to commission a written translation, and how to develop language support services as part of an effective overall communications strategy.
